Some seven-eleven shops will be open all night long.
MUSEUMS:
Museums, galleries, tourist attractions, banks and post offices are also closing early afternoon.
National Gallery is open 10am-2pm.
BATHS:
Szechenyi, Gellert, Lukacs, Rudas baths are open 6am-2pm. Kiraly bath is open from 9am-2pm.

Metro, buses, trams will operate as it was Sunday, till 4pm, then night buses will run.
No Chirstmas tram for today.
CHRISTMAS HABITS:
Dec.24th is a private, family holiday in Hungary, we don't go to parties. Kids are kept busy outside home, while parents or grandparents are decorating Christmas trees on the holy night. Christmas tree is bought by angels, gifts are bought by baby Jesus. Children enter the room only when tiny bells ring and they sing Christmas songs, then open their gifts.
Religious families go to the Midnight mass
CHRISTMAS MENU:
The menu for lunch is something really light. One of the most typical is poppy seed bread pudding. We usually eat fish with mashed potatoes and beigli at Christmas night (This is a rolled up crust with lots of poppy seed or walnut filling. Yummy..!)

Streets are getting very quiet for the rest of the day

Shops are closed.
Shopping Malls are open for movies only. Shops in the malls are closed.

Churches are open all day long. Main service is at 10am or 11am.

NEW YEAR’S EVE HABITS:
Streets are full with people before midnight. Street stalls on the streets of Budapest sell champagne, masks and noisy paper trumpets. Seniors are mainly watching TV or going to parties. We say “BUEK” (it means happy new year) at midnight and most of us sings the national anthem and greet each other.
NEW YEAR’S EVE MENU:
Having lentil or bean dishes on New Year’s Eve makes you wealthy. Pork is considered a symbol of progress and prosperity so Hungarians eat mainly roast pork Avoid fish as it will swim away with your fortune.
GOOD TO KNOW:
Streets are busy all day long. Peak time is 8pm-midnight.
Concerts and theatres have early evening performances and shows.
Restaurants, bars, clubs have extended opening hours and many have live bands playing.
There are lots of parties for New Year’s Eve, so you definitely won’t be bored!
There are plenty of programs to entertain you from free street parties to upscale balls and crazy clubs with local DJ's. Tickets varies from 2000-4900 HUF
The biggest public event of the year is “Üget?szilveszter” (don’t even try to pronounce) at Kincsem Park. A place to go for both trotting and flat racing. Avastly popular extraordinary trotting meeting that attracts all ages on the afternoon of New Year’s Eve.

"VÖRÖSMARTY TER" - live bands from different countries will perform.
"NYUGATI TER" (M3 metro line, tram 6, 4)- Hungarian pop-rock bands will entertain you there.
"OKTOGON TER" (M1 metro line, tram 6.4) all night disco with Hungarian DJ-s.
Hint: Bring warm clothes! Buy champagne in the shops before arrival. (2.5€)

Recommended sightseeing activity in Budapest in case of freezing weather:
Glowing Christmas tram in Budapest.
Pest side Christmas tram N.2.runs every Mon, Wed, Thu, Sat, Sun. 5-9pm.
It.goes along the Danube Promenade from the Central Market to the Parliament.
Buda side Christmas tram N.19. is operated on the rest of the week same hours from Batthanyi Square to Gellert Hotel .
You need Day Card or single ticket. Mulled wine is highly recommended!!
Please note :Christmas tram doesn’t run 24th and 31st Dec.

Weather
Since Budapest has a continental climate, the only advice I can give is : expect low temperatures, dress for the weather! It starts to get dark at about 4.15pm.

We have horror stories each year about tourist traps in bars and "guides who take you to these bars", double price lists, pretty ladies invitations etc. Beware of pretty ladies or student-like girls who speak some English and are very keen to invite you to have a drink with them.These bars force customers to pay exorbitant bills and they operate ATMs too.Always verify the cost before purchase. A statue of Ronald Reagan is being erected in Budapest, outside the US Embassy on the 100th anniversary of his birth.
Reagan played a big role in the fall of Communism. He and Gorbachev made a real breakthrough in the arms race.

The reason we don’t clink beer glasses when making a toast is due to the tradition of remembering how Austrians celebrated the excution of 13 Hungarian generals by clinking their beer glasses.

Besides this landmark, Elvis got a posthumous citizenship for recognizing his support of the 1956 Hungarian uprising against the Communist Soviet Union.

He also dedicated PEACE IN A VALLEY song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F0TgEMpaJ_Y) to the still fighting 1956 Hungarian freedom fighters.

Grand Prix weekend is one of the busiest time in Budapest. We have horror stories each year about tourist traps in bars and "guides who take you to these bars", double price lists, pretty ladies invitations etc.

Beware of pretty ladies or student-like girls who speak some English and are very keen to invite you to have a drink with them.These bars force customers to pay exorbitant bills and they operate ATMs too.
Always verify the cost before purchase. (especially the drinks)
Beware of pickpockets and hold tight your wallet at crowded touristy places, buses, subways and markets.
Don't let the seemingly helpful taxi drivers to transfer you to clubs, restaurants or your hotel back. Negotiate with the driver upon the fee and don't pay more than 3000HUF for any ride.
Stay safe, be clever and have a nice time in Budapest.

Public transport in Budapest

Validate on board the ticket by inserting it on buses,trams and trolleybuses. Sometimes you have to place your ticket downward-facing, into the little device provided for that purpose, then pull the knob.
When using the metro, validate your ticket before you get to the platform even if they tell you it is enough to have it. Inspectors can be extremely rude and aggressive. Of course they speak only Hungarian. Always ask for the receipt if you were fined by the inspectors, otherwise your money is going to their pocket..
If this is the case, start recording the corrupt inspector on your camera and upload it on Youtube.

How to enjoy the FREE ALL-DAY FOLK DANCE PARTY in BUDAPEST

We usually recommend you avoiding the touristy downtown, but Sunday (21March) come by Vorosmarty square to listen to the Hungarian Folk Dance between 11AM-6PM. If you are lucky you catch the youngest generation singing and dancing for you.
If you are on tight budget do avoid the eateries at Vorosmarty square. Our travelers were complaining about paying 20Euros for a typical Hungarian dish. And of course, Don’t keep important things in ANY outside pockets in your backpack, jacket, or purse. Protect your belongings from the pickpockets. We just saw 2 people were caught by the police. We don't want to make you paranoid, enjoy the arts&crafts market together with the folk show and have a great day.

If you are traveling with kids, take your family to the Children's Railway next Monday. Arrive early between 8 and 10AM and join the 20km long walk into the Buda Hills. Pay 900 HUF /pp enjoy the fresh air, the free refreshments together with using Children's Railway for free. Using the Heritage Railcar on the way back would need extra ticket.

I took the travelers on the Free Budapest Walking Tour to see some cool innovations that changed the life for women.. We learnt the history of women's stabilizing devises (bra) and other handy beauty stuffs. The steam-iron was very suggestive!

TOURIST TRAP IN BUDAPEST

This morning our travelers informed us that when they asked for a glass of tap water at an inner city bar -to gulp the medicine pills, they were told that tap water was not drinkable as it was not safe. The staff wanted them to order bottled water. So they ordered and payed 1200 HUF for a bottle.

Budapest's drinking water is among the best in Europe. It meets the strictest quality standards. And has no aftertaste!
